INPUT NEEDED

WOW! I'm blown away by the positive response I've received over the Clipmarks format for iPICKS! ... 80+ comments! Thank you so much ... so glad you like this style! I'm convinced that I've pleased my readers, but after reading this comment, I want to make sure the original artists aren't dis-pleased with me ...

Anonymous said ...
Okay so here is the one not so popular opinion. I see your picks as a way to drive traffic to the blog of the original creator. I love checking your site each week for the record. Isn't posting the pictures if you did not get permission copyright infringement? Not only that you have moved their creation to another site to host the image. I totally get why you all love it being this done this way but is it fair to the original creator?

If you are/were the original artist, would you feel indifferent about the Clipmarks format? I have alot of friends in stamping blogland, and don't want to lose any! Your thoughts?

Oooo, Nancy, I love the new format. I think it's obvious you're not taking credit for the work yourself, and it's exposure for the artist. It certainly doesn't take traffic away from the artist. Good job!

Ann Schach said...

Nancy, I do not have a problem with the Clipmark format. My link is there in case anyone wants to check out more details. If they like what they see, I certainly hope that they visit my blog. To be perfectly honest, I never even thought about any of the issues brought up by "Anonymous". I am just thrilled that you appreciated my efforts, and that you take the time out of your busy schedule to share your iPICKs. Thanks...Ann

I can understand the comment, but in my opinion, it's not a copyright violation. Most have watermarks directly on their photo's and there is still a link to the original blog. Of course, there are various opinions on what constitutes copyright law when it comes to shared paper crafts online ...

As for blog traffic driving: I LOVE seeing the photo's all at a glance. I'm more likely to go to the blog by seeing the photo than I am by a text link! Plus, it shouldn't be about driving traffic to a blog. It's about sharing your favourites of the week.

Just my opinion as a humble blogger :)

Thanks for all you do and your genuine concern, Nancy!

If you were to choose something from my blog (which would be awesome), I don't mind because Clipmarks includes the original link. Putting it out there on the web makes it public - if you don't want it shared, don't post it. If the site required a password for access, then I'd say you wouldn't have the right to post it. Otherwise, I don't see a problem with it. Just my humble opinion.

If my work was featured on your blog with my name and a link as you did with Clipmarks I would be wrapped. You are not claiming it as your work, are crediting the original papercrafter and leaving a link to be followed for further investigations...all good in my book:)

Anthonette said...

I wouldn't have a problem with you using Clipmarks for one of my cards. Take care.

Beth said...

Hi Nancy,
"Ditto" on everything Renee said above! + I hope you keep the clipmarks format it is way easier and faster :)

Jen Tapler said...

Nancy - I think the Clipmarks are fantastic and personally wouldn't mind a bit for my photos to be used in that way. Although "anonymous" does bring up some interesting points. I will admit that the times I've been featured on your iPicks posts I've been thrilled to see a large increase in blog traffic (I think we can all admit we're a little vain and do love that increased traffic, right?), although it's not really a big deal, just kind of a neat little "perk". With that in mind, as one of your iPicks readers I do greatly prefer the Clipmarks format, however I definitely didn't do as much clicking through to blogs this week as I normally would. So...it is an interesting point.

But my vote is still for the Clipmarks - I agree with the previous comments in that, for me anyway, it's more about sharing ideas and inspiration than blog traffic!!

Brandi Wiggins-Côté said...

I know there are two schools of thought on this, like Renée said. I, personally, think it's all good with the Clipmarks but I'd have no reason NOT to think that. I was mega flattered when you chose one of my cards a few weeks back! I don't take myself very seriously. LOL!

Thanks for being such a sweet person, Nancy!

I prefer to see the clipmarks - helps me determine if I want to go see the project/card/etc up close or not! Please please keep it!!! :)
I don't like having JUST a link even though that is what some might prefer...I just don't have time to look at them in that fashion.

Pam Speidel said...

Hi Nancy! Since you're asking for opinions, I want you to know that I think your Clipmarks format ROCKS! :) As a huge fan of iPicks, I love seeing your list all at once, without clicking on every link. However, if I want to see more or read all about a particular creation, you've included the link and I can easily click on it. You're doing this for all of us and I see it as a win win for everyone! YOU GO NANCY GIRL! Smiles, Pam :)

StinkerbellSteph said...

Personally, I don't always have time to click on all your iPicks but, when you post the pics I can't resist and end up surfing all of these glorious sites. Odds are most of them I wouldn't have looked at if I hadn't seen the picture.

Charlene H. said...

I love the Clipmarks! I like the idea of your iPicks but with my computer being slow I don't go to look at them anymore. It just takes too long for each separate blog page to load. With the Clipmarks, if I like the card then I will go to the original blog site to get more information. I think these bloggers will find even more increased traffic from people seeing glimpses of their cards than just the blog link you used to provide with iPicks. Please keep it up!

Andrea said...

I agree with the comment on Jen Tapler at. Nancy, I love the Clipmarks. You link to the original blog and that's ok.

Kathy Mc said...

Well, I haven't read one negative comment on this post yet so I think we all concur that Clipmarks rule. Have to agree if I see someone's card in your iPicks selections and I like their style, I'm more apt to look at their blog and add it to my Reader. Before I didn't click on the link so never saw their card or blog. Make sense? You are very creative and have great taste. Keep it up and know you are appreciated!

Unknown said...

I can honestly see both sides of this one. I love the new format, Nancy...but I can see why some would be upset for losing some blog traffic via your original iPicks list. Alot of people are like me and won't take the time to go to the original blog if they can see them all on one page...but for me it is soooo convenient! LOL!

Either way is fine with me...I don't envy this decision you have to make at all.

Hey there Nancy! I have to admit that when I read the comment from 'Anonymous' I got a bit annoyed. Why is it that when someone (You) tries to do something wonderful for others in the crafting world, there's always someone who can find negativity in it? I don't understand it!

Seriously, what ever happened to 'sharing what we love'? My advice to you is to keep doing the clip thingy's cause its so much easier to view and in my opinion, you are doing NOTHING wrong. I know I've found some awesome bloggers through your weekly picks that I quite possibly may not have found otherwise!

Thank you for taking the time each week to do it for us!

I LOVE the new clipmarks format. It does make life alot easier and if I like a design I still open the original designers link and look around the rest of their website. If anything it saves me time when looking for designs I like as inspiration.
Playing devils advocate, on the copyright issue it's something I am very aware of being a photographer. And yes is it against copyright to use someones images without their permission.
That being said if any of my images were chosen I would be completely flattered!!

Lynne said...

I am not a blogger, but I have two comments.
First, I agree that I love this format. If I want the details, you have the link there for me to click on. If not, that blogger hasn't lost anything. I'm not caseing their project anyway.
Second, it looks like you already have blanket agreement from quite a few bloggers to post their creations. Should you happen to come across one whose permission you don't already have, why not just ask their permission before posting. After a while, you won't need to do it any more.

Nancy:

I loved the new format, I was thinking I gotta figure out how to do this! LOL! When I go to your picks for the week I don't like having to delve into every blog to check out a project I may or may not like. But I do cause I didn't know there was another way. you brillantly figured it out! This way if I like it I obviously go to their site and explore their blog. One it saves time and two I think most of the people know you and your motives so I would not worry about nay-sayers( however you spell it.) Especially stampers that quote the law about you highlighting someone's beautiful work, scary) I think it was brillant and I hope you keep the new format!! Remember if our motives are in the right place God will always bless the turn out!Pray about it!

I think the Clipmark format would actually add traffic to those blogs that you are showcasing cards from. If any of the cards showcased really stand out, the viewer can instantly go to that blog to see the many more wonderful creations that person has posted. I'm all for continuing with the Clipmark method. Keep up the great work Nancy.

Tilly said...

In my opinion (for what THAT is worth, lol) once something is posted on the web, it has gone from being private to being public. This is the reason that so many artists now have watermarks on their photos. If someone were to share a creation from my blog (and also provide a link to my blog), it would only provide more exposure to my blog. I say keep up the good work. If you have a specific request from the creator that work not be shared that, then by all means - don't share their work anymore! Rock on Girl!

Lisa Curry said...

Ditto, Tilly. Once it's on the web, it's public. Most photos you've added have watermarks, you are adding the blog link and you are not saying they are your design. You're doing a wonderful job with blog ettiquette and "sharing what you love". If there is a problem, it's the scarry "C" word...change. Love the new format.

Lynda said...

I don't think there is anything left to say! I loved the new format and agree that since you have the link posted to the stampers blog,I don't see the problem. This is not brain surgery we do...it is stamping!!!

Kerin said...

Hi Nancy,
I've been one of your iPicks a few times now, and I had to chime in here that the new format is great! It's nice for the original creator to enjoy lots of extra traffic the week they're featured, but it's also VERY nice for you to go through the work of finding all of these beautiful creations to show in the first place! The link is there, you're not claiming the projects as your own, and we should be thankful to be featured by you, no matter how you do it :)

Silke Ledlow said...

Hey Nancy....you can post a photo of my stuff anytime - he,he,he!!! I'm always honored if you think my creations are good enough to share with you blog readers!!!

I love stopping by and seeing you and *who* was chosen on your IPICKS!!! I nearly get to blog hop these days so seeing different blogs/cards in one stop makes it easier for a busy mom like me!!!

Keep your fav's coming...I'll stop by regardless!!! Hugs ~S~

First of all anonymous says that you are directing traffic to another artists blog, and then says that said artists rights are infringed. So what is it? I don't think this person fully thought through what they were writing and I for one would be pleased to have my artwork displayed as you are clearly giving credit where credit is due!

Kerry H said...

Hi Nancy. I am not a blogger either but I do have some comments on this issue. The new format is the best. Technically it could be seen as a copyright violation though. However if you ask permission as the other poster suggested that would solve the problem. I subscribed to 2 blogs yesterday as a direct result of the new IPicks format. And one blog I am reading the posts all the way back to the beginning. I would not have found either blog without you. Thanks for making it easier.

Nancy, I love the new format for your iPICKS using the Clipmarks format. I look forward to your iPICKS every week and enjoy seeing all the creativity by other blogs. I always go to the original artists' blogs to look at their other creations. In fact, your iPICKS have introduced me to new blogs. Never have I felt you were taking credit for their work. I would think that all these artists would applaud you for showing all your followers their creations and introducing others to their blogs.

Your blog continues to be one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing your wonderful creativity as well as others, for which you always give them credit. You all inspire me!!!

I love seeing your ipicks each week and the nice thing about the clipmarks is that now I can see a picture too and make it so much easier to find what I remembered. I love looking at all the blogs that you pull from. I too have seen a lot of blogs that I would never have gone to had it not been for your picks. This week I was saved quite a bit of time because some of the picks I had already seen and so I didn't have to go there agaian.

Make any sense?

keep up the great work!

I am not a blogger; however, I subscribe to many, some of which I found through your iPicks. And I thank you, Nancy! If I were a blogger, I would be honored if you chose to display and link one of my creations through clipmarks. Most blogs I read have "fine print" like you do which says something like "my artwork is shared for your personal inspiration." It seems to me that is what you are helping them do.

Sue said...

I love this format and hope it stays. I have favorite sites just like everyone does and with this new format, I have added some, so from that standpoint I think these bloggers are getting MORE people checking them out, not less. We each can choose our attitude for the day and quite frankly some people always choose the negative. I've found that on the blogs and have dropped those people off my list. I come to these sites to be uplifted, not dragged down. You're doing fabulous!!!!!

Yowse, my downline and I anxiously await your IPicks each week and jump up and down when we appear (even "toot our horn" on our private blog). I can't see anything but positive (exposure, new traffic) by showing the pix and linking the photos (all good). Anonymous may have a point in terms of copyright . . . not sure on the legal side. Hugs, Mary

I do not think it takes anything away from the original Artist. In fact it gives them more exposure for free. If I were the original Artist I would feel honored that you chose my work. It has the potential to bring traffic to my site which in turn means more readership for me and possibly more followers. I think that it is a win-win situation. Just my opinion. Love the new format and hope that you decide to keep it.

If this were my picture posted on your blog, I would be in heaven. You are generating more traffic my way. If one of these bloggers has a problem with it, don't publish there stuff.

I don't understand why the anonymous poster has a problem with what you are doing. You give credit and you link to the creators blog/website. I think what you are doing is terrific!!

MaGoooo said...

I'm not sure why anonymous has an issue with the new clipmarks format! YOU never have taken credit for any project that wasn't yours! You also give a link to their site and I too agree that it will only bring more traffic to their site! I would think that the original creator would enjoy this! I know when I have things posted on your site I feel very lucky & fortunate! I do not think that you will lose any friends!

What amazes me the most is how people like to point out a negative side, but they don't want anyone to know who they are. hmmm jmho.

I say keep up the GREAT job you have always done Sweetie!

Love the new format! I sure hope you decide to keep it that way. There have been weeks when I just didn't have the time to click on each link, so I know I missed out seeing your picks. You are not claiming the work as your own and they did post it for all to see. Plus you provide a link to their blog. Better all around, I think.

Hi Nancy,

I'm afraid I may not be a lot of help but I'm going to put in my two cents away! I love the Clipmarks format it makes it so, so easy to see all the picks.

However, having said that. I tend to get very lazy when surfing through blogs! If I don't physically have to visit the site, chances are I never will. I've subscribed to some great blogs once I visited the actual site.

I don't know how others do it. I know I have Mozilla for a browser and I can open up all the tabs at once and quickly get through all the picks.

Truthfully, I thought the Clipmarks may be more work for you!

Whatever you decide I'll be happy!

I think it's wonderful, it gives me the opportunity to see not only your stuff but I can go to each link and admire their work. It's truly free advertising for other blogs if we like their cards. And I don't think I've ever seen the copywrite icon on any. It's not like you're taking any credit, she sharing cards and how to find them. Keep using the clipmarks....

I like the fact that I can see all the cards and that there is a link back to the owner instead of having to click on each link prior to clipmarks and have to visit each blog.
With this kind of show and tell of course you may need to get the owners permission first to showcase their cards on your site...thats a given blog etiquette, some people dont mind and some others do.
As a viewer I like that the cards are shown, as a blog owner, I'd like to first be asked permission

I realized after reading this that I won't get as many people to visit my actual blog, but I'm still flattered to be "iPicked" and "clipped." Thanks, Nancy!

Michelle (abzzymom) said...

I love looking at your picks. Lately, I've been so busy that I've had to pick and choose which project I want to view just based on the title of the project. Because of this I may miss out on some outstanding work. With the Clipmarks format, I no longer have to choose which project to view. I can see them all at the same time.

Anonymous brought up some good points, but viewing the projects via Clipmark won't keep me from going to that creator's blog. If I see something I like, I visit that blog to look at other things they've made. If you were to choose something I made, I would not have an issue with you showing it through Clipmark as long as you give proper credit and link it, which you already do.

Hope this helps. I look forward to more picks.

Nancy-

I have to admit, I love to click on the links and be taken to the blog so that I can see just a little more what they are about by seeing it on their site. I also love that I can click and see more of the their creations so easily. I also think if I was ever picked by you, which I hope to be one day, I would prefer you linked to my blog directly, but I would be so darn excited that I might not care at all.

Whatever you choose, I'll still visit your blog!

Anonymous said...

I don't think Anonymous was being negative, I think she was asking a valid question about legal issues. I know one week when I had a project on your blog my traffic hit its highest count ever. I am sure having the clipmarks DOES effect that, but I think it is okay. It is still great exposure, but it really MIGHT be a legal issue...but I am no lawyer...

The new format is AMAZING!!! I understand where the other blogger is coming from but keep it with the clipmarks. Hugs.

Nancy,

If I like the card that is in the Clipmark then I will click on it and go check out the blog to see what other cards, etc that they have on their blog, where otherwise I would not go to that perticular blog. I love your blog and thanks for sharing all that you do. And it does put other artist at my fingertips.

I love the clipmarks and I do not agree with the negative comment. The original blog link is easily located above, giving the author credit, but if anything it drives traffic TO that particular blog. I am always on the lookout for more blogs...and this does the trick. Everyone's a winner.

MEL said...

I think the clipmarks are pratical, fast and easy for the person viewing the pictures. But, it'll only make me REALLY lazy and I'll probably never go back and actually check out the blog of the person that was ipicked. LOL!

Grace said...

I understand the comment and if I were a designer and had my own blog I would feel stronger about this, but.........as one who likes to surf all the blogs....I think that if I really liked the clipmark card, I would go to the blog for more. If I have to go to each individual blog to even see the card, I may not do so, strictly because of the time it takes. guess I'm saying, it's better to see the card as a clipmark with the possibility of going to the blog than not seeing the card at all. good question though - appreciate the difficulty you have have in making your decision on how to share....

Sara said...

keep it up Nancy! I loved it and would have never thought about "copyright" stuff.

Kris Kilcoyne said...

I am flattered to be featured as an iPick and don't mind being clipmarked.

I think it's an unfair assumption to assume that Nancy is responsible for driving traffic to our blogs.

Being picked certainly helps, but I don't rely on you to help get more traffic. :)

Love your site!

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't be upset AT ALL b/c if you picked my card 1) you really liked it (you have lots of viewers of your blog) and 2)you have the site posted where you got the card (which will increase blog traffic and spark regular hits on the creator's blog) so what's the big deal???? I think the new format is awesome! If I see something i really like then I am more apt to check out a blog AND bookmark it or sign up in a feed to view the blog all the time. I do see what the person of the comment is getting at BUT the link is there and I think the creator's will see an overall increase in hits to their blogs. Just my 2 cents :)

Lisa said...

I don't think you are doing anything wrong Nancy. You are giving the artist credit by directing viewers directly to their blog sites and I believe the creaters name is listed on your site as well. You are not posting the artwork as yours, so I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Other SU blogs I visit put other's artwork up and give credit--so what is the difference. I LOVE your new format. It makes it so much easier for those of us that do not have alot of time to go to every site!!! Thank you!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I still go to the original blogs for the projects that I really like.. I totally agree with Lisa's comment it just makes it quicker!

Linda Callahan said...

Love the clipmarks - you credit the artist - enough said - more exposure for the artist and a quick link to the blog. When people CASE a card they often show and credit the original on the post as well - not too different from a clipmark. Plus I thought the point of posting was to share ideas with as many people as possible and sell your product - not to say "look what I did and no one else had better do it....."

Just a testimony to my own quirks....liked the other way better as I got a chance to visit AND (often) BOOKMARK new sites. I'm not a blogger and never will be, but I am an enthusiatic follower and reader of many stamping and paper arts blogs. Think the old way is a great way top bring traffic to newbies. Love you either way, Nancy!

Anonymous said...

I think your Anonymous commentor had a very valid point of view from the artist, do you have their permission.

On the other hand, as a viewer, I'd like to say to that person, that when I do see a card I want to know more about, I click on the lick to read all the details on it, going to their blog, and then if time permits peruse their blog.

In the end, I think it is a good thing, and for the artist also. IMHO.

Anonymous said...

I don't know how it can be copyright infringement if you give credit to the person you took the picture from. It actually gives them better exposure because you are advertising their work for free. As someone who looks forward to your ipicks, I appreciate the work more because I don't have to keep clicking on each site, I just go to the ones that catches my eye. And if it was my creation that was reposted by someone else, then I would be very much flattered.

More power to you!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Anonymous.

I don't see anything unkind but it does redirect web traffic.

While I appreciate ease and convenience, my business brain knows this is not right ... and you are in business.

Kristin Moore said...

Nancy, In the end I think this is your call. To help ease your mind you could ask permission from the artist before they are chosen, but really you are doing nothing but good for that artist.

You aren't redirecting web traffic away from anyone. As a person who has been gleefully chosen in your iPICKS more than once I did notice a HUGE traffic spike before the Clipmarks but I also noticed a slight increase after the Clipmarks... so either way you are directing MORE traffic to those artists than if they weren't listed at all.

However, driving traffic isn't really the point or the goal of this anyway, right?! Go with your heart lady, you're good as gold!

Karen Graff-Povis said...

Hi Nancy, I am one that has been chosen in your IPicks in the past! I was so honored to be picked! And it did pick up the traffic on my blog. I really don't think it will stop the traffic with the Clipmarks. I think if the person wants to see more details, they will click on your link to their blog or gallery. Or maybe they like the artist's style and would like to see what else the artist has created. But personally I think the clipmarks are wonderful!!! It's a big time saver for me! And if I like the card/project, I will most definitely click on it and leave a comment on the artist's blog!

It all comes down to what you think and would like to do. It's your time after all! I don't think you will loose anyone as a result of the decision you make.

Keep up the good work!
Karen
